5 Steps to Updating Your Resume

You might have spent enough time in the job market working jobs for years and amidst all that you might have missed the chance of updating your resume. You see after years of being in the job market we just neglect that piece of paper which helped us get into a job market. No matter your experience, if your resume couldn’t portray it effectively, you would always find difficulty getting that ideal job.
Resume was and would always remain the most important document that would indicate your professional personality. Here are some quick tips that would help you upscale your resume in a very little time.

1. Update your skills

Now that you have been in job market for over years, you need to remove those entry level skills that helped you get started. Proficiency in MS word isn’t an additional skill you possess but a mandatory skill you should have. Update the skill sections with the certifications you gained and new skills you learnt. And if you have nothing new to fill in that skill section, it is perhaps the time to start learning some skills. Because no one could survive in today’s job market with that years old skills. Besides, if you’re applying to specific position, your skill sets should add all those keywords used by recruiters for that position. Go through numerous job descriptions and identify the skills that could be relevant for that new job role.

2. Remove old details

You need not need to mention each and every details of your job experience over the years. Now that you’re in a job market for over years, it is time to remove old experience that have little or no relevance today. Instead make the experience section more enriched with the details that would be relevant for the job you are applying to. Recruiters are more interested in how you could bring them results for the position they are offering.

3. Change the formatting

Your resume doesn’t need to be as visually appealing as those with an artistic skills. However, you cannot undermine the power of properly formatted resume. Firstly, you leave an imprint of responsible and sincere individual when you have an aptly formatted resume. Besides, it isn’t that hard to add appealing structure to your resume, with plethora of resume templates to select from. Tiny changes of adding appropriate font style, font size and alignment might seem to carry little importance, but they add readability to your document. And that is perhaps the most important aspect that clicks the recruiter to read further.

4. Simply change your file name

It might be easy for you to locate your resume among hundreds of files with a file name as simple as resume. But imagine the mail box of a recruiter that is flooded with thousands of mails with a similar name of attachment “resume”. How would you stand out when the mistake as small as your file name would not pursue a recruiter to open that mail. Make a simple change of adding name to your file. I.e. Rohan Shah’s resume.

5. Proofread it

You don’t need to be Grammar Nazi to proofread your resume. Identify the silly spelling errors or reconstruct the statement that is evidently wrong. Get it proofread by your friends or family members and you would be surprised with meager mistakes in your resume.

6. Bullet it

Just as visuals are preferred over write ups, bullet points are preferred over long paragraphs. Don’t make a mistake of boring a recruiter with unnecessary details. Keep your achievements, experience and skill section, concise, precise and on point.
